Wind Turbine Noise Problems

Wind power is one of the most popular forms of renewable energy. The industry is increasing by thirty percent per year as more and more wind farms are being built around Europe and other places in the world.

However, they have proven considerably controversial in certain areas more than others. They do not generate a great deal of electricity and greater numbers of them are required – spanning over an enormous area of land to make an adequate impact on the huge demand for energy.

Unfortunately, wind turbine noise problems have been holding the progress of the technology back.

Although they are entirely clean in their production of energy and produce absolutely no pollution at all, they are noisy and can be damaging to the local environment. This is because they generate a great deal of noise, especially when they are particularly active. They are also considered to be unsightly and most people do not want wind farms located near their homes.

Wind turbines may also be located out at sea which lowers their environmental impact. Unfortunately, this is often not practical or even possible. Newer technology is starting to address the noise problem of wind turbines but it is still a major issue that is causing a great deal of controversy and reports have shown that the problem is still quite serious and can even have an adverse impact on wildlife living in the area of the turbines.

It is also believed that a number of health problems can arise from the certain low frequency noises which come from the turbines. Two recent studies in the United Kingdom attempted to prove this but have been dismissed by the advocates of the technology who say there is no solid evidence to back these claims.

In certain cases, the noise generated by these turbines can be heard as far as three kilometers away.

However, it is been found that rotors with three blades generally produced less noise than those with two blades. Nonetheless, many people are still absolutely convinced that the problem is far from being solved and the noise produced is still far from satisfactory.

Another problem caused by these wind turbines is the damage they can potentially cause to the local inhabitants. They are a danger to birds which can fly into them and die and due to the huge amount of space they take up, large tracts of land need to be completely given over to them essentially expelling the local wildlife population to a large extent.

With many other forms of renewable energy available, some may find it surprising that this industry in particular is continuing to grow at such a large rate.

Wind Power For Homes : Yes, It’s Possible

Electricity is getting more and more costly and is a huge burden on the environment. So it is no wonder that there are many individuals that are going green in order to not only save money, but save the earth as well. This includes everything from battery powered cars to wind power for homes.

Wind energy can be defined in either technical terms or simple terms. Simply put, you can turn the wind into electricity by using a wind turbine. Wind turbines consist of a large tower with huge blades that are turned by the wind. The turning of the blades produces energy which the turbine turns into electricity that you can use to power your home.

Would you like to hear it put in another term? Basically, it works the opposite way a fan works. Technically speaking, the fan uses electricity in order to turn the blades which produce wind. The turbine uses the wind to turn the blades which produces electricity.

A hundred years ago, windmills were used for milling flour. The idea of a windmill was basically the same as a turbine – let the wind move the blades and do the work for you. Back then, of course, no one would have envisioned powering a whole house with this. But technology is a wonderful thing and the initial ideas for windmills have given birth to the modern wind turbine.

Wind power is a wonderful renewable resource that does not harm the environment. However, a turbine is rather ugly and does make a bit of noise so you certainly would not want to put one near your house or near a neighbor. In fact, most towns have ordinances dictating where you can put a residential turbine and you do need to have a lot of land in order to use one to power your home.

One turbine does not really produce a lot of electricity either. You need more than twelve turbines in order to power your entire house.

Also, the storage of this power is not so advanced and there will be times when there is no wind so you cannot rely entirely on using wind power to run your home at all time. Like solar power, the best solution is a combination of using the wind power and going back on the grid when there is not enough energy being produced from the wind.

As technology moves on, you will see more residentially friendly version of the wind turbine. There are even some models coming out today that are not as intrusive to the environment but can produce some power and can be simply mounted on the roof given the right conditions.

So, you see, wind power is a great renewable resource that will become more and more accessible to the homeowner in the future.

What Are Wind Farms?

There are many different forms of renewable energy available today and one of the fastest growing sub industries is that of wind power which is growing approximately thirty percent per year.

Wind power works by converting the kinetic energy of the wind into electricity. Rather than having large power stations like many of the traditional methods, this kind of renewable energy comes from wind farms.

Unfortunately, there are a number of disadvantages associated with this kind of renewable energy. The problems generally comes down to one thing, that a single windmill does not produce a useful amount of electricity for today’s high demand.

This is why enormous tracts of land need to be given over to having dozens and dozens of these turbines set up in a “farm”.

These farms are usually located in large open spaces of rolling plains where there is a high amount of wind. They may also be placed out at sea where they tend to have less of an impact on local environment.

However, in spite of being a thoroughly clean form of energy production, they have a number of other disadvantages.

They can be severely detrimental to local wildlife populations due to a number of factors such as the noise that they produce and the large area of land they require. They also a danger to birds which risk flying into them and they have been a number of reports which suggest that the noise generated by them can have a number of adverse affects on health.

There are not too many people who want to have a wind farm near them and this is not only due to the noise they generate, but they also very unsightly and can be seen and heard from several miles away in some cases.

Offshore wind farms tend to be more effective and practical and have minimal impact on the local environment. These are particularly popular in Denmark where they have been constructed in a number of places and provide a considerable amount of electricity to Copenhagen and other places.

Current research is also looking into the possibility of airborne wind turbines. These would basically be suspended in the air without having to be fixed to the ground by a tower. Instead, they would be kept in the air by vehicles such as aerostats. The biggest disadvantage to these is, however, the risk of lightning storms.

Wind farms have actually been in use in many places for decades, but this old technology is not as efficient or friendly to local animals and birds.

As the push for green energy increases, the technology for wind turbines will increase also and someday you may find wind farms being replaced by more efficient systems that have less of an impact on the local wildlife and resources.

What Are The Benefits Of Windmill Power?

Windmill power is slowly becoming more popular as a renewable energy source as more and more people begin to look into harnessing it as a viable alternative. The whole situation here is the actual building and installation of a windmill or wind turbine for power considering your ordinances and following building regulations.

For residential use, wind power is powered by a large turbine that consists of huge blades on top of a very tall tower. Since the blades must be above anything that would obstruct the wind, the windmill itself juts out above the tree tops and is rather unsightly.

It can also generate quite a bit of noise pollution which is why there are typically ordinances as to where you can place them. Needless to say, no one wants one of these right in their backyard so you do need to have quite a bit of land to use one.

Now we are using the blades to create electricity to power our homes and businesses. The important thing to consider before turning to windmill power is the average wind speed in your area. Obviously to create power you are going to need to make sure that there is enough wind to turn the blades of the turbine.

Therefore it is always a good idea to look into how much wind your area usually has on a semi constant basis at least. The general fact with wind turbines is they need 7-10 mph of wind before they are able to start producing power on any sort of usable scale. The rating of wind that is generally considered to be ideal for producing power is with consistant wind speeds of 12-20mph.

Of course this is because the larger the scale of wind the more power produced and the scale here is quite dramatic in the increase in power. In finding your local wind resource map there are several places to look. These can be obtained from your national environment department or sometimes they are even published online.

Regardless of the situation using wind power is a step in the right direction for ourselves and our environment.

The Invention Of Wind Cubes Could Be The Answer To Commercial Power Usage

A unique wind turbine has been designed just for industrial and commercial power users that are in an urban location called the WindCube.

Depending on the amount of usage that is needed, wind cubes can be installed one at a time or as a pair. One single wind cube can generate up to 60kW of power and the dual wind cubes can generate 120kW.

A good majority of the energy being generated in the wind industry today is by using the natural free stream wind. The difference with the wind cube is that it catches the wind and then amplifies it, which then will produce more kilowatt-hours than the units currently on the market.

Wind becomes very concentrated when it comes into contact with the WindCube shroud thus producing an increased velocity, which creates more power. Due to space issues in urban settings, the WindCube was specially designed to produce energy in a small area. By creating a unit that will amplify the natural wind speed and which has a very small footprint, this design has the greatest amount of output in the wind industry.

Wind cubes are designed for the large power users and are intended for use on urban roofs. If the roof cannot accommodate the wind cubes they can also be mounted on a tower nearby.

To conserve space, wind cubes can be stacked on top of one another and will automatically turn to get the best angle for wind collection. You also have the option of installing screens on these units to prevent birds from flying into them by mistake.

Some of the units are designed so that the blade helps to increase the torque, or turning force for spinning a generator. The shroud will protrude in front of the blades about 3 feet. Then the shroud will narrow down towards the blade, which will speed the air velocity.

The turbine can begin to generate some power with wind speeds of only 5 mph however, by the time the wind comes in contact with the blades it is actually moving much faster due to the design of the cube.

Problems With Wind Turbines And Birds : Is It Really As Bad As You’ve Heard?

At first glance wind energy generated from turbines seems like a great renewable energy source, but you might think twice about it if you were a bird in Californina. That’s because one of the oldest wind farms – the Altamont Pass California wind turbines are responsible for killing thousands of birds each year.

While this problem has had a lot of press, it seems the actual enormity of it might be a bit skewed. You see, this wind farm uses an older technology turbine which has shorter blades. This type of turbine is very hazardous to birds which is why the mortality rate of birds in the Altamont Pass wind field is so high.

Thankfully, modern technology has not only improved the efficiency of turning wind into energy, but it has also improved the mortality rate of birds who are unlucky enough to fly near a wind farm. Modern turbines have much longer and larger blades which are much less likely to kill a bird in flight.

That being said, certain things should be kept in mind when citing a wind farm. We need to take into consideration the impact these blades that are constantly rotating will have on the various species of birds in any one area where the turbines are placed.

Placement is definitely a consideration for these farms, but there are constraints in some countries regarding land mass. If we want to generate electricity from wind, then the options aren’t always plentiful.

Any area of the world considering moving into the use of wind based energy should try their best to do it in an environmentally responsible manner. There needs to be an understanding that there will be an impact on birds and other types of wildlife when we encroach on where they live. There needs to be an effort made to minimize harm to the animals and also to the blades of the turbine.

Just like anything else, wind power carries with it a certain responsibility to the environment. However, if planned carefully, a wind farm can be a great source of renewable energy that has little impact on the environment and the animals surrounding it.

How Wind Turbines Work

There are several different types of wind energy. At its most basic wind is actually a type of solar energy as wind is formed from the heating of the earth. Winds occur because the entire earth is not heated to the same temperature and land heats up much faster then water.

These temperature differences create wind. It is possible to collect this wind energy and convert it into several different types of power and one of the most popular vehicles for this today is the wind turbine.

To collect wind power the wind is used to turn blades in a windmill or turbine which then converts this motion into electricity. This electricity can be used for many different activities including pumping water, powering your home and grinding grains and even stone.

A wind turbine is a tall tower with huge propeller blades. Unlike a fan which is powered by electricity the wind turbine moves due to the wind and this movement is what creates electricity. The blade turns, the shaft spins and this shaft is connected to a generator that produces electricity.

The majority of wind turbines use a horizontal axis though there are vertical axis turbines that look more like egg beaters than propellers. The largest wind turbines are horizontal axis turbines.

Wind energy is desirable because it does not create any pollution and is renewable. You can collect as much wind power as you want and there will still be plenty of wind in the future. It also does not produce any greenhouse gases or air pollutants.

While wind energy is very cost efficient the initial costs are still very high, though you will soon make this money up by all of your energy savings. Most of the cost is purchasing the machinery. However there is very little maintenance required, no fuel and very small operating costs.

The main concerns with wind turbines are that the blades may produce a lot of noise and aesthetically they are not very pretty to look at. For this reason, wind farms and even residential turbines are usually placed far away from view and out of hearing distance.

The blades also have killed birds and bats that have flown into the blades. Most of the newly designed wind turbines have managed to reduce these issues and it is possible to disguise the turbine using properly placed plants.

As long as there is even a slight breeze you can get power from the wind.

However when there is no wind you may have issues. The only way to store wind energy is if you have batteries connected to the system or are directly hooked into the electrical grid. As this technology matures, there will be better options for storage of the energy, making wind power accessible to more people.

In this day and age, pretty much everyone knows that we need to start focusing on renewable sources of energy and solar power is one of the most talked about.

In areas where there is not enough sunlight for household needs, systems can be setup so that you can hook into the electrical grid during those times when more energy is needed.

While installing a solar power system for your home or business can be expensive at first, you will eventually see a savings because as time goes on you will not be paying that monthly power bill.

After the initial costs, gathering power from the sun is free so once you have your collection and storage systems set up, you will be reaping the benefits not only in the monthly savings but also in the benefits to our planet.
